Energy transition

Why transformers are the backbone of the energy transition

Solar parks, wind farms and battery storage systems are growing at record speed. What is often overlooked: every one of these plants needs at least one transformer to feed its energy into the grid – and the requirements are very different from those of a classic distribution substation.

Volatile loads instead of steady operation

A transformer in a photovoltaic park works at full load at midday and idles at night. Battery storage systems switch between charging and discharging within seconds. This places high demands on thermal design, insulation and losses at partial load.

  • Low no-load losses pay off when the transformer is connected around the clock
  • Robust windings handle frequent load changes
  • Compact designs simplify integration into container solutions

Efficiency counts over decades

Transformers stay in operation for 30 to 40 years. Even small differences in efficiency add up to considerable amounts of energy and CO₂ over this period. That is why the EU Ecodesign Regulation sets minimum requirements – and why many operators deliberately go beyond them.

The right transformer for every application

Whether oil-immersed or cast-resin, distribution or power transformer: the choice depends on the location, the load profile and the grid connection. Our specialists support you from planning to commissioning.
